Tax Refund for Backpackers
We have made it easy to get your tax back. For that we have teamed up with New Zealand’s easiest Tax Refund Service. Out in-house Tax Agent is taking care of your application and will get back as much tax as possible for you at a super low rate of 19 % of your refund.
We provide 2 ways to apply for a tax refund: Online and with a paper form, which you can get at reception and place into the tax refund box.
How much money do I get back?
The average refund for backpackers is around $300.
The amount varies depending on:
- How many jobs you have had
- How many jobs you have had at the same time
- How many hours you have worked
- How many breaks (days off) you have had
- If your employer deducted tax correctly
- If special tax credits apply to your situation
Who can apply?
Everybody, who has worked a single day or more in New Zealand can apply for a tax refund.
How much does the application cost?
We charge a very low fee of 19 % of your refund, which is automatically deducted from your refund. If you are not owed a refund, we do not charge you.
When should I apply?
Today.
Although a tax refund will only be issued after the end of the tax year, unless you leave New Zealand, we encourage you to apply today. We will automatically process your tax refund as soon as this is possible and inform you when it is ready to be transferred to your account.
How long does it take?
The processing time for a tax refunds is between 2 and 12 weeks depending on your circumstances.
Do I have to be in New Zealand to apply?
No. It does not matter where you are in world. You can apply from any place and we can do tax refunds for the last 5 years.
We recommend to leave your New Zealand bank account open to have your refund deposited into it, even when you are overseas again. However, should you not have any bank account in New Zealand anymore, we also offer to send your tax refund to a bank account in your home country.
